The legal requirements for businesses providing treatments varies depending on a number of factors.

Why are the requirements different?

The legal requirements for medical and cosmetic laser/IPL users depend on the regulating authority. Many establishments using lasers or Intense Light Sources (IPL) in the UK have to be "registered" (e.g. with the CQC or HIW) or "licenced" (e.g. London boroughs).

The core laser safety requirements should be the same but often there will be additional requirements that operators must adhere to in order to obtain their registration/licence.

What would an LPA do?

Once appointed, your LPA will set to work helping your business successfully meet safety standards and comply with any particular licence/registration/insurance conditions. This would usually include an initial site visit to your premises to assess the equipment, facility and help with the administrative requirements (risk assessment/management, local rules etc.). Once your service is up and running, the LPA can be appointed on an ongoing basis to provide continual support. An annual review of the facility and equipment can also be undertaken and a written laser protection summary report issued.
