Health and Beauty Businesses
Offering Laser and IPL Treatments:
The Legal Requirements
All businesses using IPLs and laser equipment must,
- Undertake a suitable and sufficient risk assessment
- Provide safety information and training for all staff
There are also some additional requirements depending upon where in the UK you are based.
a) In Wales, all operators must register with the Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW). Please contact the inspectorate for more details. Telephone: 029 2092 8850, Website: www.hiw.org.uk
b) Many councils in England require a special treatments licence for premises using IPL and laser equipment. Please contact your local council (usually the Environmental Health Department) for details of their particular licence conditions.
c) In areas where the local council has no special bye-law to requiring a licence, the health and safety officers may still ask for certain additional safety controls.
In areas where a licence or registration is required, failure to do so will invalidate your insurance and may incur penalties from the regulator.
In England, for surgical laser treatments, businesses must register with the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
