Laser and IPL Licensing, Birmingham UK
Following deregulation of laser/IPL use in England by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the task of regulation will, in many cases be passed to local authorities.
Under the Birmingham City Council Act 1990, Birmingham City Council has powers to licence premises that provide "massage and special treatments". This is not quite as sordid as it sounds and in fact covers treatments such as:
- body massage;
- therapeutic spa baths;
- herbal baths;
Premises using lasers and intense pulsed light (IPL) devices (e.g. clinics and tattoo studios) are currently not covered by the Act.
However, businesses may still wish to demonstrate a commitment to safety by attending a laser/IPL safety (Core of Knowledge) Course
and seek the assistance of a Laser Protection Adviser (LPA)
. We will post further information on this website if any special license conditions are implemented by the council.
The above information was taken from the Birmingham City Council Website. Please visit the site or contact the council directly for further information.
