Medical and Cosmetic Laser Regulations in the UK
Regarding the use of lasers and intense light, national health and safety legislation (e.g. 'optical radiation at work regulations 2010) will apply across the board. However additional regulatory requirements may exist depending upon whether the laser is used in England, N.Ireland, Scotland or Wales. This is further complicated in England by the existence of regional bye-laws. Some Local Authorities (councils) have powers to insist that all premises using lasers/IPLs obtain a 'special treatments licence'. The conditions that need to be met to be granted a licence currently vary depending upon the council. Local authorities in London seem to have taken the lead and largely began implementing these powers in October 2010. However, a consistent approach has not been taken and some of the written conditions are clearly at the 'draft' stage. It is hoped that this will improve in time.
