Why appoint a Laser Protection Adviser, LPA?Legally, businesses must demonstrate that they have appointed a 'competent person' to oversee their risk assessment and risk management.
For certain hazards, external specialist help may be required. In the medical/cosmetic sector the term laser protection adviser, LPA is commonly used. In some parts of the UK, businesses offering medical and cosmetic treatments using lasers are required to appoint an LPA by law.
What qualifications is an LPA required to have?
The term LPA is not a protected title and so pretty much anyone can call themselves an LPA. The term 'certificated laser protection adviser' is sometimes used to impress the layperson. However, there is actually no official 'certification body' or standard criteria of competence.
An LPA certificate is not a qualification as such and on its own does not offer full assurance of an adviser's suitability.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have produced a short guidance document, Getting specialist help with health and safety, which sets out a number of criteria that should be considered when choosing a specialist safety consultant (an LPA in this context).
