Laser training: Laser and Optical Radiation Safety Training

New Legal Requirements for Laser (and other Optical Radiation) Safety Training

The Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations 2010 state that where a risk from optical radiation exists, the employer must provide sufficient training. This includes:

laser safety training - the measures taken to minimise risk
- exposure limit values
- an explanation of the findings of the risk assessment
- detecting and reporting adverse health effects
- health surveillance
- safe working practices
- proper use of personal protective equipment.

This came into force on 27th April 2010. The Regulations also cover Risk Assessment, Health Surveillance and a range of stipulations that employers must adhere to in order to reduce or eliminate the risks from optical radiation. Your Lasersafe LPA can help you meet the requirements of this new legislation.

Those involved in Private Health Care will also have to adhere to the National Minimum Standards Regulations. These state that laser safety training must be undertaken to a defined syllabus.
